Fixed Insert Secondary Glazing

Vision Insert Panel

Starting from £95

The fixed insert panel is the simplest type of secondary glazing in the Clearview Vision range. It is a flat aluminium-framed section of glass — using a slim 17 mm × 19 mm profile — that can be used wherever there is minimal reveal depth or very limited fixing points around the window.

Insert panels are face-fixed directly to the surrounding reveal or frame and can be drilled on location (face fix only). The recommended fixing pattern is approximately 100 mm from each corner, then at 200 mm to 300 mm centres along each edge. Fastening screws and edging trim are not included.

An optional draught-excluder compression tape (available from DIY retailers) can be applied to the back of the panel to compress against surface imperfections and improve the air seal.

Insert panels are ideal for decorative windows, stained glass, or any situation where purely thermal insulation and condensation control is the goal rather than opening the window for ventilation. All units are part of the Vision range and are covered by Clearview's 10-year guarantee.

Is a fixed insert panel right for your window?

Fixed insert panels are the right choice when you need maximum simplicity and the window does not need to be opened. Typical applications include:

  • Decorative or stained glass windows where the primary glazing is irreplaceable
  • Narrow window reveals with very little depth for a sub-frame
  • Areas where fixing points are too limited for a conventional slider or hinged unit
  • Rooms where purely thermal insulation or condensation control is required
  • Commercial properties and listed buildings where a discreet, semi-permanent solution is needed

The slim 17 mm × 19 mm aluminium profile keeps the visual footprint to a minimum, and the panel can be removed if required by undoing the face-fix screws.

Size Guidelines & Production Viability

The ratios of Width × Height × Glass Weight determine whether a unit can be manufactured and safely handled.

The online price calculator will indicate if a unit falls outside standard production parameters or needs a glass upgrade. Maximum dimensions are governed by the width OR height of each panel independently.

Important: Insert panels are face-fixed only — they cannot be used in a sub-frame channel. For larger panes, always check that the fixing surface can carry the glass weight safely.

Units over 1800 mm in either dimension can be delivered flat-packed at an additional charge.

Insert Panel Specifications

SpecificationValue
Maximum Weight45kgs
Maximum Width1400mm (4mm) / 2000mm (6mm+)
Maximum Height1800mm (4mm) / 2000mm (6mm+)
Special NotesMaximum panel weight 45kgs

Maximum width is determined by panel weight and height, it may not be possible to make some units in the maximum width/height specified and will need to clarified at point of enquiry.

  • Glass weight and do not exceed the maximum panel weight.
  • Maximum area for 4mm glass is 1.6m². If panel size exceeds this, allow for 6mm toughened glass.
  • Maximum area for 6mm glass is 3.0m². If panel size exceeds this, allow for 6.4mm laminated glass.
  • Flyscreens: maximum size 1200mm in one direction

Performance Recommendations

To get the best from your fixed insert secondary glazing, consider these performance guidelines:

For Sound Proofing

For noise reduction, the air gap between the insert panel and the primary glazing matters most. Even a relatively small gap of 50 mm to 100 mm will provide a noticeable improvement. For best acoustic results, aim for 100 mm or more and consider an acoustic laminated glass option (6.4 mm or above). The fixed insert design is not primarily aimed at maximum acoustic performance — if sound is the main concern, a horizontal slider or vertical slider may give you better results alongside a larger air gap.

6.4mm Acoustic

Excellent for high noise; pairs best with 150–200mm air-gap.

acousticsafety

For Thermal Insulation

For thermal insulation and condensation control, a gap of 50 mm to 80 mm between the insert and the primary glazing is usually sufficient. Glass thickness has little direct effect on thermal performance. Low-E glass can improve results by 5–10% compared to standard glass. Standard 4 mm toughened glass is the most cost-effective option for most thermal applications.

Low E Toughened

Boosts insulation up to ~10% over standard; ideal 50–80mm gap.

thermalsafety

Condensation

Fixed insert panels are particularly effective at eliminating condensation because they create a sealed air pocket in front of the primary glass, raising its surface temperature above the dew point. Even a small air gap is usually sufficient to stop condensation forming on the primary pane in most UK climates.

Low E Toughened

Improves inner pane temperature, reducing condensation risk.

Safety & Security

All glass options meet BS EN 12600 impact resistance standards. Toughened glass provides solid everyday security. Laminated glass is available if the window is a potential entry point — it holds together when broken rather than shattering, providing an additional deterrent.

6.8mm Clear Laminate

Class A safety; strong deterrent and impact resistance.

Glass Options for Secondary Glazing

Vision insert panels are available with a full range of glass including standard toughened (4 mm, 6 mm), acoustic laminated (6.4 mm, 6.8 mm, 8.8 mm, 10.8 mm) and Low-E coated glass for enhanced thermal performance.

For most fixed insert applications — where the primary goal is thermal insulation, condensation control or protecting decorative glazing — 4 mm toughened glass represents the best value. Acoustic glass upgrades are available if reducing noise is also a priority. Contact our team for personalised advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the panel be removed once fitted?

Yes. Although the panel is described as "fixed", it is secured with screws and can be removed by undoing the face fixings. This makes it easy to clean the primary glass or repaint the reveal when needed.

Are screws and trim included?

Fastening screws and edging trim are not included. Both are widely available from DIY retailers. Our Help Centre fitting guide explains exactly what you will need for a standard installation.

What is draught-excluder compression tape and do I need it?

Compression tape is a foam or brush seal that you stick to the back edge of the insert panel before fixing it in place. When the panel is screwed home, the tape compresses against the reveal and fills any small gaps or surface imperfections, improving the air seal. It is optional but recommended for older or uneven window frames.
