Size Guidelines & Production Viability

The ratios of Width x Height x Panel Size x Glass Weight affect how easy it is to build units that work for you.

If the online estimate algorithm can't figure it out, it will either tell you that the unit is too big or too small, or it will suggest glass improvements. Look at "Why Won't My Quote Calculate?"

NOTE: The maximum sizes are dependent on the width OR height of each span, not both. Weight decides whether a panel size may be made.

There are units that are greater than 1800mm wide and long. You can choose to have it delivered in flat packs, but it will cost more.

The maximum width is based on the panel's height and weight. When you ask us about building some units at the maximum width and height, you should be aware that it may not be achievable.

Hinged Units Specifications

SpecificationValue
Maximum Weight65kgs (SL) / 100kgs (HD)
Maximum Width1400mm (SL) / 1500mm (HD)
Maximum Height1800mm (SL) / 3000mm (HD)
Special NotesTwo variants: SL and HD with different specifications

Maximum width is determined by panel weight and height, it may not be possible to make some units in the maximum width/height specified and will need to clarified at point of enquiry.

  • Glass weight and do not exceed the maximum panel weight.
  • Maximum area for 4mm glass is 1.6m². If panel size exceeds this, allow for 6mm toughened glass.
  • Maximum area for 6mm glass is 3.0m². If panel size exceeds this, allow for 6.4mm laminated glass.
  • Flyscreens: maximum size 1200mm in one direction

If you need any more assistance, email us with sizes of the required unit.

Performance Recommendations

The easiest approach to make your home more energy efficient is to use our hinged casement secondary glazing solutions. The glass panels let us change our range to get the greatest outcomes possible. We propose the following to get the most out of your installation:

For Sound Proofing

You should try to get an air gap of around 150mm to 200mm, but anything above 100mm would work fine. When you decide, keep in mind that the thicker the glass, the more it will block out unwanted sounds. If your window has an odd shape or the space is small, thicker or acoustic glass can help fill in the small air gap. Keep in mind that a narrower spacing will make it less effective.

6.4mm Acoustic

Excellent for high noise; pairs best with 150–200mm air-gap.

acousticsafety

For Thermal Insulation

The air gap is not as crucial when it comes to thermal insulation. You will see good gains with a space between 50mm and 80mm. The thickness of the glass isn't as important either, and it won't do much to keep your home warm. Low-E (low emissivity glass) can make things 5% to 10% better than regular glass. This is only true if the primary window is in good shape, though.

Low E Toughened

Boosts insulation up to ~10% over standard; ideal 50–80mm gap.

thermalsafety

Condensation

The same idea works for getting rid of condensation. Secondary glazing won't guarantee that the problem will be completely fixed, but it has a long history of making it considerably smaller and easier to deal with.

Low E Toughened

Improves inner pane temperature, reducing condensation risk.

thermalsafety

Safety & Security

All of the glass replacements we offer meet or exceed the BS EN 12600 standard for impact resistance. Both toughened glass and laminated glass are great ways to make your property more secure. People are less likely to try to break in when they notice a second layer of security to contend with.

6.8mm Clear Laminate

Class A safety; strong deterrent and impact resistance.

Glass Options for Secondary Glazing

There are many different types of glass that can be used with our hinged secondary glazing systems. These include toughened or laminated choices and a choice of inconspicuous finishes that you can choose from. We normally suggest 4mm toughened glass since it is safer and meets Building Regulations.

People can get confused about which option is best for them because there are so many. People may spend too much money on the glass because they think it is more important than it really is, even though they could have gotten good performance for less. Be sure to do your research beforehand or contact our experts for more information.

Glass Weight Calculator

Use this calculator to estimate the weight of your secondary glazing unit. Please note that these figures are estimates and may not be 100% accurate - always consult with our team for precise calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between SL and HD hinged units?

SL (Standard Load) units are perfect for most residential windows up to 1800mm in height. HD (Heavy Duty) units are designed for larger windows and commercial applications, supporting greater weight and larger dimensions up to 3000mm in height.

Can hinged units be fitted with tilt and turn functionality?

Yes! Our Vision range hinged units come with optional tilt and turn features, making cleaning and maintenance much easier while providing excellent ventilation control.

Are hinged units suitable for listed buildings?

Absolutely. Our hinged casement units are perfect for heritage and listed buildings as they don't have transoms or mullions that would hide the character of your existing primary window.
